Film: I don't really need a reason I just want to talk at you about it.
Oct 28, 2022
Hey don’t tell anyone, I have a bunch of peoples family video from the 70s and 80s.
So if you are from Northern Idaho named Candice or Justin, and understand what breaking dominos means hit me up.
Film is something I have come to appreciate over time, unlike my born in 1999 young person digital video technology, film is not a series of 1s and 0s that A actually physically exist and B is not defined by pixels.
Which is quite a cool thing because if you put in the effort you can take these exposed pieces of film from over 80 years ago, clean them up a bit, scan it and then convert them to digital file with at least a 2k resolution.
While my terrible 240p digital video will suck to look at even with the
MAGICAL POWER of ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE.
Film on the other hand, shoot it’s going to be put on a CRT screen from a projected image. You can experience it on a screen 5 inches big or 50 inches big.
The better thing about digital is that you don’t need to physically edit your video, you know with like scissors and tape.
Though you do need to buy into as subscription model to edit digital video.
So uh, pick your poison.
Or you know physical is a problem as well, one hour of film is 800ft long.
As well as that Frame Rate thing film started. 24 for film, and because gaming we want more and that is reasonable, for gaming.
In general let artistic intent rain and do not go Capital G gamer with a Z at the end on all media because “it is simply the superior thing”
NOW FOR SOMETHING TANGENTIALLY RELATED
Aspect Ratios are fun. I think square screens are nice as well. I am a degenerate in the digital age.
I think 4:3 ratio of hight to length is really cool. While the now vastly popular 16:9 with its wide screen vibe rectangle is great.
Square is just natural to a retro-media person like me.
This is currently in my room.
I appreciate the digital age because you can really pick and choose what you want and have it last FOREVER.
Film gave us the extreme conflict in Hollywood about how films were to be watched.
Different aspect ratios cut off things in a frame and caused entire shifts in the filming industry with things like shoot to protect. So when other jerks that are not you chop up your film for VHS all the important things are in the frame.
I like things that are unique and old. I consider the old way not a dead bygone thing, but something for emulation and preservation.
Sure it may not be to a modern standard, but neither is anything produced before last year.
The history of technology and the style that its limitations cause on the medium is something I enjoy massively and for me knowing how it is made improves my enjoyment of the media massively.
Often now there is nothing but, we wanted to save money and we already had a computer, when it comes to the behind the scenes.
FIN.
Digital is great but lacks much of the character and limitation that created the style of older films and videos.
Film is oddly good, despite worse technology it can now be brought from small pictures on film to 4k re-releases.
Old technology should be appreciated for what it is and propagated and replicated for artistic style.
I like CRT screens and hope someone makes new ones in the future.
