Hi, have you ever listened to Japanese Jazz?
Oct 25, 2022
Jazz it has a history.
In Japan that history is ignored and quite innocently iterated upon as how we consider Jazz in the United States was gleefully ignored.
From that we get people like Yuji Ohno, Tokyo Brass Style and those crazy people from Soil and “Pimp” Sessions.
On a side note Soil and “Pimp” Sessions developed what they call
DEATH JAZZ
I could not make this up if I tried.
My fall into J-Jazz was quite innocent, after all I just watched Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro. I enjoyed the music, perhaps too much.
This lead me to buying some Lupin vinyl, and researching Yuji Ohno.
He taught himself Jazz. Then made the score for one of my favorite Kindaichi Kosuke Murder Mysteries “The Inugami Family”.
One of my first posts ,in social media in general, has to do with the Kindaichi Kosuke books and soundtracks
Followed by a long line of anime tracks from “Space Cobra” and most the “Lupin the Third” tracks to this day.
All his tracks and “Jazzier versions” of his work in Jazz can be found on his YouTube channel.
It’s all brass? It always has been.
Tokyo Brass style is an all woman group with 11 members.
They started as street performers before making a group and turning popular Anime themes into Jazz songs.
I love their rendition of “Gatchaman no Uta”.
They are the easiest to listen to by far.
Their albums consist of a pile of anime themes turned into Jazz music that actively flow into one another, so though you are listening to one album it turns into one song.
It is good for the soul.
Wait what was that about Death Jazz?
Soil and “Pimp” Sessions, came up randomly on my music searches.
I cant figure out why the band is named that. I think it might be “foreign name sound cool let’s go with that” but I cant be sure.
Their music is chaotic. Unique. Stylish.
It is meant to take your full attention and live off the audience’s vibe. Combining DEATH METAL with JAZZ.
They call the lead of their band the Agitator.
What?
They wear the trappings of hip-hop, 70’s gangster-wear and skater-wear.
You need to see a picture or watch a video of them.
They started in a coffee shop, and it appears they still don’t give a damn what genre is or the tradition of the arts.
I am simply in awe.
If you want to know what I am talking about look up their song.
fin.
I haven’t even talked about the Seatbelts and their Jazzy doings.
Or the mystery which is the Rapper Lotus Juice.
In summary I think you should listen to some Jazz, even some Death Jazz.
Perhaps also try combining things you enjoy to make new things and don’t be afraid to experiment.
I think the world is a better place with Death Jazz.
